.
C. Lukens is a native of Ohio and is of Quaker parentage. He was born
at Short Creek, Harrison County, March 20, 1845. In 1857 the family moved
to Sterling, Ill., where Mr. Lukens went to school winters and worked
upon the farm summers until the spring of 1861, when the first call came
from President Lincoln for troops. Mr. Lukens responded to this call and
had the honor of being a member of the first regiment sworn into the service
"for three years or during the war." This was the 13th Ill.
Vol. Infantry, which was sworn in at Camp Demont, Dixon, Ill., May 24,
1861. After two and a half years of service, Mr. Lukens was honorably
discharged on account of physical disability. September 8, 1875 he was
married to Miss M. J. McImoye. Five children
have been born to them, four sons and a daughter, all of whom are now
living, except the oldest son, who died at Redlands in 1888. Mr. Lukens
first came to California in 1880 and resided at Pasadena for seven years,
then coming to Redlands. Having
always followed horticultural pursuits, he naturally took to orange growing,
and is now living upon a ranch of thirteen and a half acres set to citrus
fruits.
