Jacobs is a native of Bredstedt, duchy of Schlesvig, which formerly belonged
to Denmark, but is now a German state. He came to America at ten years
of age and lived in Ohio until he came, with his family, to Redlands,
September 28, l891. His early life was spent in mercantile pursuits. In
l861, under the special call of Governor Brough, of Ohio, he entered the
United States service in the l69th regiment of O.V.I. After the war he
continued the business of general merchandise, having formed a partnership
with his former employer. In l872, with others, he started "Lakeside,"
the Chautauqua assembly of Ohio, an enterprise in which he still retains
an interest. In l875 Mr. Jacobs married Miss Clara Kingham,
of Port Clinton, Ohio. He has devoted most of his energies to orange growing
since coming to Redlands, having purchased a grove on Cypress avenue.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs are active members of the Methodist
church and he is the president of the board of directors of the Y.M.C.A.
He is also a leader in temperance reforms.
