B. Cryer is a native of Leeds, England, where he was born in 1849. In
June, 1871, he came to the United States. In England he had learned the
business of manufacturing woolens, but he has followed other occupations
in this country. He was married in England to Miss Elizabeth Grange.
They have had four children, all born in the United States and all living
in California.
On coming to this
country Mr. Cryer went first to Nebraska, where he resided for fourteen
years. He then came to Southern California, and lived in Pasadena, Los
Angeles and other cities of this section before he came to Redlands December
10, 1895.
Mr. Cryer bought
his present business immediately on coming to Redlands and established
himself next to the post office on Orange street, where he has remained
ever since. He has increased the business that he purchased at least on
hundred per cent, and has added other lines. He now has the popular news
agency of the city; handles all of the principal papers of Los Angeles
and San Francisco, and takes subscriptions for all publications. He carries
the leading periodicals in stock from month to month. The business has
grown until it keeps himself and two members of his family constantly
employed. In connection with the news department Mr. Cryer also keeps
a choice assortment of the leading brands of cigars on the market.
With an excellent
location and a constantly growing demand in this community for books,
newspapers and periodicals Mr. Cryer has a business capable of steady
expansion, one that already demands larger quarters an is certain to prosper
with the continued prosperity of Redlands.
