at Elmira, N. Y., in 1852, M. F. Clute has had a varied career in a score
of states and territories. Having early learned the painter's trade, he
has followed it in many different sections of the country, and has also
engaged in other occupations at various times and places. In 1889 he came
west to Colorado and to Redlands five years after. Most of his time for
the past ten years has been devoted to prospecting and locating mines.
He has followed this business in Colorado and Old and New Mexico, as well
as in California, and now owns mines in Mono county, north and east of
the Yosemite, in Death Valley, the Panamint country and at various points
on the desert between Redlands and Granite Wells. Mr. Clute has eleven
good mines near Mono Lake, one of which has been extensively developed
and is considered a fine property. He believes that there is just as good
mining country within two days' ride of Redlands as there is anywhere
in California. He was one of the original locators of the Redlands mine,
which created considerable excitement three years ago, and in the value
of which Mr. Clute still believes. He has been twice married, first to
Miss Sarah B. Younts, who was born in Pennsylvania,
and, after her death, to Rose B. Caldwell,
also a native of Pennsylvania. Mr. Clute has three children, all of them
living in California.
