Wilbur N. Chamblin

he first warehousing business in this city was started by Wilbur N. Chamblin, in partnership with J.S. Edwards. These energetic young men had formed a partnership in March, l886, under the firm style of Edwards & Chamblin, immeditately after Mr. Chamblin's arrival in Redlands. Before the warehouse, 50x144 feet of brick, and solidly constructed, was completed, the firm gave their entire attention to the nursery business. Upon completion of their large building, warehousing, packing and shipping of fruits and storage, claimed the greater share of Mr. Chamblin's labors. Gradually the stock was increased by the addition of other lines, and a large business was established. In March, l891, Mr. Chamblin purchased the interest of his partner and conducted the establishment alone until the spring of l896, when the Redlands Commercial Company was formed and succeeded to the business, Mr. Chamblin still retaining an interest. In January last Mr. Chamblin withdrew entirely and went East to recover strength lost in over work and to take a needed rest . He is at present in Texas.

Mr. Chamblin was born in Kalamazoo, Mich., November 5, l861. In the following year the family moved to Jackson, Mich., in l865 to Sterling, Ill., and finally to Galesburg, in the same state, in l872. In the latter place Mr. Chamblin received the greater share of his early education, in the public schools and in a business college. In l880 he came to California, and for two years was on a fruit ranch in Riverside. He then took up the study of engineering and for two years was engaged with Fred Eaton, city engineer of Los Angeles. Returning to Riverside, he was for two years with the Riverside Water Company, employed in the construction of a 3,300-foot tunnel, and a 6,900-foot flume across the Santa Ana. He was also engaged with the Azusa Water and Development Company. He then came to Redlands, as above noted. In l888 he was elected County Surveyor for a term of two years, during which time the City Creek road was located. He also laid out Hillside Cemetery. Mr. Chamblin is a Knight Templar and was for several years a trustee of the Presbyterian church. In Frankford, Ind., he was married to Miss Hulda Wainscott, in December, l888. The have one child, Marie, four years of age.
