native of Mitchell, Iowa, J. W. Chambers came to Riverside, Cal, July 1883, while still a young man of 23 years. He engaged in ranching, and in December 1884, purchased of Judson & Brown about ten acres at Redlands and removed to this city the next January. The following May he planted his land to oranges. This property is located on the north side of Cypress Avenue, east of Cajon Street, and is now one of the ranches adjacent to the business center, although, when Mr. Chambers set it to navel oranges, there were neither orchards nor business houses in Redlands worth mentioning. October 27, 1884, at Riverside, Mr. Chambers was married to Miss Grace Sampson, a native of Kenosha, Wis. They have two children living. This is one of the families which may truthfully be said to have grown up with the young city of Redlands and to have prospered with it.
