Mrs. R.B. Canterbury

n a little building which stood near the residence of S. J. Hayes, on May 4, 1884, the first public school in Redlands proper was opened with fourteen scholars. This building now stands south of and adjoining the Baptist parsonage. The teacher for the first term was Miss Rosa Belle Robbins, a daughter of Mrs. E. P. R. Crafts. She was born in San Bernardino, Cal., July 29, 1861, and attended the public schools in that city. Removing with her mother to Crafton, at the age of 14 years she was teaching school in an old adobe house. Her pupils were Indians, who paid her a small amount monthly. In 1881-1882 she attended the Normal School at San Jose, and was for one year a teacher in the public school at Chino, previous to the opening of the first school at Redlands. In January, 1885, she was married to L. A. Canterbury, of San Bernardino. They had four children, three boys and a girl, who are now living with their widowed mother in this city. Mr. Canterbury was drowned while in bathing at Long Beach, Cal. September 11, 1890.
