Brown, manager of the Russ Lumber Company's
business in Redlands, was born in Green county, Ill., December 16, 1855.
Until fifteen years of age he lived with his parents upon a farm and received
such an education as could be obtained in the common schools. He then
entered Blackburn University at Carlinville, Ill., and after a two years'
course of study, went to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and there received a thorough
business education in Eastman's Commercial College. After graduation,
he returned to his native State, and was a bookkeeper for various firms.
In September 1883, he was married to Miss Hester Harrington,
at Carlinville, a native of Lincoln, Ill. The have one child living, a
boy, now twelve years of age. After marriage Mr. Brown was in several
states seeking a suitable place for a permanent home, which he eventually
found in California. In 1885 he engaged in the planing mill and lumber
business in Eureka, but sold out, after three years experience, to become
manager for the Lincoln Mill Company in the same place. He remained in
that position five years, when he resigned to come to Redlands, in December
1896, to assume the position he now holds. Mr. Brown is captain of the
Uniform Rank, K.of P., and a Master Workman of the A.O.U.W. He was recently
honored by a tender of the captaincy of Co. G.N.G.C., but business compelled
him to refuse the offer. The Russ Lumber Company began business in this
city, August 1, 1890.
