The
Census
The
census of Redlands, herein contained, was commenced February 10
and
completed May 1, of the present year. The month of April was
devoted
to the compliation of facts unsecured before that time, in
regard
to the number of trees planted out in the city. In the enumeration
of
the inhabitants the greatest care was exercised in the elimination
of
tourists
and temporary residents. The figures given below are for
Redlands'
actual, permanent population. No person was listed who did
not
have a lodging within the city's boundaries. The results is as follows:

In
common with others, the writer has committed the error of giving
the
population
of Redlands as 1,982, according to the United States
Census
of 1890. "Redlands township" is credited with that number,
but
"Redlands,
town" with 1,904. On the basis of the last figures, the
percentage
of increase in seven years has been a fraction over 106.7
per
cent. Considering that the city's growth has been wholly due to
its
value
as a fruit producer and residence locality, the increase is
certainly
remarkable.
