FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 1897 OUR SPECIAL EDITION Originally this Special Edition was to have been confined to a complete census of the people of this city, together with the number of dwellings, the number of firms and business structures, the total number of each variety of fruit trees planted out, and other equally interesting enumerations. The work of our representative, W. M. Newton, was, however so favorably received by the public, that we concluded to authorize him to make a second canvass, so that we might thereby issue a more comprehensive edition, which would include a general representation of the city, pictorial, descriptive and historical. An earnest endeavor was made to have every portion of the place represented, both by portraits and residences, the result of which is an ideal collection of a large number of our most prominent citizens, including also the mechanic and artisan. The undertaking assumed thrice the magnitude of the original plan, thereby causing a long delay in the production of what we think a most attractive and valuable publication. The work has been confined to Redlands exclusively, this making it all the more creditable, showing, as it does, the thrift and enterprise of a city only nine years old, with a population of about 4000 people, many of whom led frugal lives during a part of this period, toiling in hope, and anxiously waiting until their young citrus trees and deciduous fruit trees should come into good bearing condition, thereby affording them a competency. Now, however, an additional source of revenue is available for our enterprising people, and why should not Redlands, by taking advantage of the splendid opportunities afforded by a vast and cheap electric power at our very doors, early become a center of manufacturing industries also? With but few exceptions, all similar publications have heretofore covered an entire county, and yet, we venture to say that not one of them, on this coast at least, has been nearly as large, or contained half as many illustrations as ours. But we leave it to our readers to pronounce judgment upon the undertaking, in the hope, however, that our numerous patrons may well be satisfied with our efforts. As for us, we rest well content with the results of this private enterprise, an unusual undertaking, as in works of this kinds, the authors are usually assisted by county or city authorities. In undertaking this we did so without expectation of pecuniary reward, believing that its publication and large circulation would prove of great benefit, by a most truthful representation of Redlands and its progressive people. The edition consists of 7000 copies, a large number of which will be sent gratuitously to the public libraries of the coast, and to papers and magazines throughout the entire Union. A short sketch of the FACTS from an humble beginning, only seven years ago, may prove of interest and will fill up a niche in Redlands history. Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 44. |
