Redlands is justly proud of her schools, and the citizens gladly vote the money necessary for ample buildings, excellent teachers, first-class appliances, and other requirements. Students can obtain an education sufficient to enable them to enter with credit any college in the country. The courses of study are complete, the methods of teaching of the highest order. (Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 6) The Second Baptist Church (colored) of Redlands was organized April 28, 1891, and the church occupied August 16 of the same year. (Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 16) The communion service first used by the Congregational church of this city was a present from the Sabbath School of Jackson, Michigan, where M. H. Crafts assisted in starting the first church. (Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 16) On February 12, 1889, a Woman's Christian Temperance Union was organized in Redlands, and meets regularly once a month. (Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 58) On March 24, 1894, the African Methodist Episcopal church was organized, Rev. Arrington is pastor in charge and the society hope soon to build a church. (Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 59) The First Presbyterian Church of Redlands was organized July 7, 1887. Services, conducted by Rev. William Donald, of Colton, were first held in the little school house corner of Cajon street and Cypress avenue, but were afterward changed to a store room in the Hamilton block, Orange street. The present church was dedicated February 2, 1890. Rev. E. R. Mills was pastor from January, 1889, to October, 1890. He was succeeded by Rev. H. F. Sewell, whose services continued until July 1891, when Rev. J H. Stewart became pastor. Rev. Stewart occupied the pulpit until the fall of the present year, when he was succeeded by the present pastor. (Source: Illustrated Redlands, 1897, p. 59.) The Union High School building was completed and first occupied April 21, 1893; the present Lugonia school house, January 5, 1885; the Kingsbury, September 17, 1888; the Crafton, October 8, 1888; the Church-street, September 21, 1896.
