City Meat Market was established in the
spring of 1889 by E. M. Boley, who sold out in the summer of 1893 to J.
L. Stevenson. Mr. Stevenson was the proprietor until succeeded by
McClellan Bros. in 1896. The good business sold by Mr. Stevenson was materially
increased under the new management, but in June, 1897, T. F. McClellan
sold his interest to H. Rockoff. The present
firm endeavor by prompt service, first-class meats, reasonable prices
and strict attention to business to please all their customers. The market
business in Redlands is so completely covered by the present dealers,
that it speaks well for this firm that they have been able not only to
hold their past patrons, but gradually to increase the number. Enterprise
pushes its way with this firm, as with all others who are prompt to meet
the requirements of the time.
G. A. McClellan
was born in the District of Columbia in 1863. Both his parents died when
he was but twelve years of age, and he was compelled to leave school and
earn his own living. From that time until two years ago, he worked on
a farm. Failing health caused him to seek a change of climate and he concluded
to try California. He came to Redlands and, in partnership with his brother,
bought out the City Market as above mentioned. Herman Rockoff, the junior
member of the firm, is a native of Germany, where he was born in 1871.
He came to this country with his parents when but eleven years old, living
in Butler county, Pennsylvania, until 1888, when he came to California.
He located in San Bernardino, where he engaged in the fish and produce
business, and where he remained until he came to Redlands and formed the
partnership with G. A. McClellan & Rockoff.
