Kettering & Sherrard have been in business together, in general blacksmithing
and wagon making and repairing, since the 9th of April last, at their
present location on East Citrus avenue, corner of Fifth street. H. W.
Kettering, who had had the same location from January 1, 1896, was
born in Will County, Illinois, in 1866. He lived in that county and in
other parts of Illinois until he was 18, when he went to Louisiana and
Mississippi, where he engaged in railroading for the Illinois Central.
Later he returned to Lockport, Ill, learned his trade and worked at it
for five years. He then went into business for himself at Lemont, Ill.,
and, after a residence there of two and a half years, he came to California,
and to Redlands August 6, 1894. After working for a time in different
shops in this city, he commenced business for himself as above stated.
Mr. Kettering was married at Lemont, in 1890, to Miss Matilda Bittles.
L. Sherrard
is a native of Douglas county, Oregon, where he was born December 28,
1861. He lived in Oregon until 25 years of age, when he came to California,
going first to Santa Ana. He lived in that city from February 26, 1886,
until he came to Redlands, April 29, 1892. His first employment in this
city was for John McIntosh. Afterwards he worked at McLean's blacksmith
shop until September 20, 1895, when, in partnership with L. Dorr,
he took the shop on his own account. He continued in business there until
he make his present partnership with Mr. Kettering, last April. He was
married at Santa Ana, July 4, 1892, to Miss Della White,
a native of Iowa.
